How to choose
the right contact lens.

“Just give me whatever’s easiest.” That’s what most patients say when we ask about contact lens preference — and it’s also why so many wearers end up uncomfortable, dry, or quitting contacts altogether. The truth: there are dozens of lens designs across daily, monthly, multifocal, toric, scleral, and specialty categories — and the right one for you depends on your eye, your day, and your willingness to do (or skip) a daily routine.

Step 1: Daily vs. monthly?

This is the biggest fork in the road.

Daily disposables.

Wear a fresh lens every morning, throw it out at night. No cleaning, no case, no buildup. The healthiest option for most wearers, period. Best for:

Brands we fit: CooperVision MyDay, CooperVision Clariti 1 Day, Alcon Dailies Total 1.

Monthly lenses.

Wear the same lens for a month, clean and case it each night. Lower per-day cost. Best for:

Brands we fit: CooperVision Biofinity, Biofinity Energys, Acuvue Oasys, Air Optix HydraGlyde.

Step 2: Do you have astigmatism?

If your astigmatism is −0.75 or higher, you likely need a toric lens to get sharp vision. Toric versions exist in most brands — MyDay Toric, Biofinity Toric, Clariti Toric, Acuvue Vita for Astigmatism. The fitting process is more involved (the lens needs to stabilize on your eye correctly), but the vision quality is dramatically better.

Step 3: Do you have presbyopia (40+ and need reading glasses)?

Multifocal contacts let you see distance, intermediate, and near in a single lens — without readers over the top. Available in dailies and monthlies. MyDay Multifocal, Biofinity Multifocal, Clariti 1 Day Multifocal, Dailies Total 1 Multifocal. Some adaptation time is normal in the first 2-3 weeks.

Step 4: Special situations.

Severe dry eye or sensitive eyes.

Daily disposables with high water gradient: Dailies Total 1, MyDay. Or specialty scleral lenses for severe cases.

Keratoconus or irregular cornea.

Specialty scleral lenses (Altius), hybrids (SynergEyes Duette), or wavefront-guided RGPs (ArtOptical IntelliWave).

Myopia control for kids.

MiSight 1 Day (FDA-approved) or NaturalVue Multifocal (specialty).

Sports and active lifestyles.

Daily disposables are almost always the right answer — you can swap a torn lens at halftime, and there’s no buildup from sweat.

Frequently asked questions.

Can I wear contacts every day?

Yes, with daily disposables. Even with monthlies, daily use is fine as long as you follow the cleaning routine and don’t sleep in them.

Do I need a different prescription than my glasses?

Yes — contact lens prescriptions account for the lens sitting directly on your eye (zero vertex distance). The numbers are similar but not identical.

Can I switch between brands?

Each brand has a slightly different fit, oxygen permeability, and material. We’ll re-evaluate before switching to make sure the new lens performs well.

How long does a fitting take?

Initial fitting: about 45-60 minutes. Follow-up: 20-30 minutes. The whole process usually completes in 2-4 weeks including trials.
