Dry eye:
home remedies that work.

Dry eye season has officially arrived — cold air, dry indoor heat, and longer screen hours all conspire to make eyes burn, water, and feel gritty. Before you reach for another bottle of artificial tears, try these home remedies. They address the root causes (inflammation, dehydration, lid hygiene) and often deliver meaningful relief within two weeks.

1. Drink more water.

Sounds simple, but most chronic dry eye patients are mildly dehydrated. Target 64+ ounces of water per day, more if you live in dry climates or drink coffee. Watch the urine color — pale yellow is the goal.

2. Add omega-3s to your diet.

Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) reduce inflammation throughout the body and have specifically been shown to improve meibomian gland function. Get them from:

3. Warm compress, twice a week minimum.

Microwave a clean washcloth in damp form for 30 seconds, or use the OPTASE Heat Mask we sell. Apply to closed eyelids for 8–10 minutes. The heat melts hardened oil in the meibomian glands.

4. Humidify your bedroom.

A cool-mist humidifier overnight can cut morning dry-eye symptoms by half. Target 40–50% humidity. Especially important in Chicago winters when heating systems dry the air to single digits.

5. Lid hygiene.

Use a gentle cleanser like We Love Eyes Tea Tree Foam on closed lids each morning. Follow with a daily hypochlorous spray (Heyedrate). This takes 30 seconds and is the most-underused dry-eye intervention.

6. Take real screen breaks.

20-20-20: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Blinking rate drops by 50–70% during screen use, which dries the tear film. Forcing a break restores it.

7. Use preservative-free artificial tears.

Drugstore tears with BAK (benzalkonium chloride) preservatives can actually worsen dry eye over time. Switch to OPTASE Dry Eye Intense Drops — preservative-free, 300 drops per bottle, contact-lens compatible.

8. Consider an oral supplement.

EyePromise EZ Tears attacks dry eye from the inside with 8 anti-inflammatory ingredients. Relief in 1–2 weeks for most patients. We’ve been recommending it for years.

When to come in for an evaluation.

If you’ve been trying home remedies for 4–6 weeks without meaningful relief, you have an inflammation problem that needs clinical workup. We’ll measure tear breakup time, image the meibomian glands, and build a treatment plan that may include prescription drops, in-office Low Light Therapy, or other targeted interventions.

Frequently asked questions.

How long until I see results from these home remedies?

Most patients notice meaningful improvement within 2-3 weeks of consistent practice. Omega-3 supplements take 4-6 weeks to reach full effect.

Can I use multiple remedies at once?

Yes — layering helps. Hydration + omega-3s + lid hygiene + warm compress + screen breaks is the standard recommended starting protocol.

When is dry eye serious enough to see a doctor?

If you have eye pain, blurred vision that doesn’t clear with blinking, light sensitivity, or visible eye redness that lasts more than a few days — book an evaluation.
