Myopia, often called nearsightedness, is predicted to affect 50% of the world’s population by 2050. The younger a child becomes myopic, the faster it tends to progress — raising lifetime risk of glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal detachment. Stellest is the first prescription eyeglass lens FDA-authorized to do something about it.
Best for: Kids ages 6–12 · Newly myopic patients · Families looking to slow nearsightedness progression

Stellest looks like a normal lens. The centre corrects vision the usual way. Around it sit rings of tiny invisible lenslets that create a second focal point slightly in front of the retina — a signal that tells the eye to slow its elongation. Essilor calls this H.A.L.T. technology. Your child sees normally through the middle; the rings do their work in the periphery.
Children roughly 6–16 whose prescription is progressing. The earlier it starts, the more total progression there is to prevent.
The published results assume full-time wear — around 12 hours a day. Part-time wear gives part-time benefit.
Both work. Glasses suit younger children and families who would rather avoid lens handling; soft myopia control contacts suit sport and older children.
Myopia control is a multi-year commitment, not a single purchase. We measure axial length rather than relying on the prescription alone, so we can see whether the eye is actually slowing — and change course early if it is not. That follow-up is the part that determines the outcome, and it is why we would rather fit these properly than sell them over a counter.
Stellest is fitted at both our Gold Coast and Hinsdale practices, usually alongside a pediatric eye exam. See our full approach to myopia control.
